INF: Refreshing

The information in this article applies to:

  • NetNewsWire 2.x
  • NetNewsWire Lite 2.x

Refresh Settings:
You can tell NetNewsWire how often to download feeds automatically. You can also set this preference for groups and for individual subscriptions.

Settings for all subscriptions:
To set your refresh settings:

  1. Choose NetNewsWire > Preferences.
  2. Click the Downloading toolbar item.

You can choose how often NetNewsWire should download your subscriptions in the Refresh all subscriptions popup menu. You can also specify whether or not to refresh at startup.

The Concurrent downloads popup lets you choose how many subscriptions to download simultaneously, from one to 50. The higher the number, the quicker the download session happens—but at a cost. The higher the number, the harder your computer is working while downloading.

For fast computers with a fast connection, we’ve found that 20 is a good choice. If you have many hundreds of subscriptions, you might try 25 or 30. But your experience may be different than ours: don’t hesitate to try a few different settings.

Tip: You can watch downloads as they happen by opening the Activity Window.

Settings for individual subscriptions:
You can set refresh settings for groups and invididual subscriptions. Settings for a group apply to the subscriptions it contains.

  1. In the Subscriptions pane in the main window, select a subscription whose settings you want to change.
  2. Choose Window > Show Info.
  3. Expand the Refreshing pane in the info window by clicking the disclosure triangle.
  4. Change the settings as you like.

You can set the number of hours between automatic refreshes. You can also specify whether or not to skip this subscription during a manual refresh—and you can even suspend it, or tell NetNewsWire not to refresh it at all.
