PRB: NNW Reports "We're sorry but we cannot locate this user account information" during activation

On Jan 9, 2008 NewsGator announced that all Client products are now free. NetNewsWire 3.1 and above do not include activation, so this issue does not apply.

SYMPTOMS

When entering the license key during activation, the wizard returns the following error:

We're sorry but we cannot locate this user account information. Please check the information you entered and try again. If you continue to have difficulties please contact technical support at support@newsgator.com.

CAUSE

This is a problem with the wizard losing session state. This is usually caused by cookies being turned off in Safari. Since NetNewsWire uses Apple Webkit - the same engine as Safari - it shares security settings.

WORKAROUND

  • Quit NNW
  • Open Safari and go to Preferences | Security
  • Change the "Accept Cookies" setting to "Only from sites you navigate to"
  • Quit Safari and restart NNW
  • Go to NetNewsWire | License...  to restart the wizard.
