INF: How NewsGator interacts with the NGOS synchronization system

The information in this article applies to:
  • NewsGator 2.0

SUMMARY

The NewsGator Online Services synchronization system is designed to keep your subscriptions in sync, and also keep track of where you read items, so that you never have to read the same content twice.

When you download a post into NewsGator for Outlook, it is deleted from the online system, so it won't show up in web edition, mobile edition, or POP edition.  The intent here is that since the post exists in Outlook, you will read it there.

When you mark a post as deleted in one of the online editions, it won't be downloaded into Outlook.

You can specify that all posts should be downloaded into Outlook, regardless of whether they have been deleted in one of the online editions; you can use this to ensure that you maintain a complete copy of your content within Outlook. But by default, items marked online as deleted won't be downloaded to Outlook.

However, NewsGator never actually changes items that have already been downloaded into Outlook.  The sync system controls whether items will be downloaded - but doesn't sync up read/unread information in Outlook.

To help explain this, here is the typical use case.  You're using Outlook at work, downloading content with NewsGator.  When you leave work, you close Outlook.  On the way home, you check your feeds with mobile edition.  You'll only see content that you don't already have at work in Outlook.  It works the same way with the web edition when you get home - you'll only see content that hasn't been downloaded into Outlook.  And if you mark items as deleted with web/mobile edition, they won't be downloaded into Outlook the next day at work.
