- NetNewsWire 2.x
- NetNewsWire Lite 2.x
Overview:
The default list of subscriptions is the tiniest fraction of what’s available. NetNewsWire comes with a big list of sites, and there are many thousands more available on the web.
How to subscribe via the Sites Drawer:
- Choose View > Show Sites Drawer.
- Click on a triangle to expand a category.
- When you select a site, its description appears in the text pane below the outline.
- To subscribe to a site, click the Subscribe button. The site will be added to the Subscriptions pane and its news will be downloaded and displayed.
- Choose View > Hide Sites Drawer when you’re finished.
How to subscribe to a site found on the web:
When you’re browsing the web, and you find a site you want to subscribe to…
- Copy the address of the site from your browser’s address field.
- Choose File > New Subscription…
- The address you copied should be filled in automatically. If not, paste it in the text field.
- Click the Subscribe button.
NetNewsWire will then try to find the feed for the site.

If it doesn’t work…
If it doesn’t work, then that’s because either the site doesn’t have a feed or it’s not listed in the standard way. In that case, you’ll need to find the URL of the site’s RSS or Atom feed.
Some sites link to it on their home page, sometimes with an XML, Atom, or RSS button. The buttons are frequently orange, which makes them easy to spot.
Once you have the URL of the feed, choose File > New Subscription..., paste the URL of the feed, and click the Subscribe button.
Tips on finding feeds:
Whenever you see a white-on-orange XML button you can click on it to go to the feed for a site. Then you can just copy the URL from your Web browser and paste it into the Subscribe dialog (as above).
Other sites may have a feed but not display any buttons. If you can’t find a feed, email the webmaster for that site and ask if they have one and what its URL is.
How to unsubscribe:
- Select the subscription in the Subscriptions pane that you want to delete.
- Choose File > Unsubscribe… A dialog will confirm that you want to unsubscribe.
Note: unsubscribing from a group deletes all the subscriptions inside a group.
