The information in this article applies to:
- NetNewsWire 2.1+
- NetNewsWire Lite 2.1+
This page documents the data that is sent from NetNewsWire to NewsGator. What data is sent depends largely on whether or not you use NewsGator synchronization. NewsGator has a privacy policy. If you have questions about any of the below, please send email to NewsGator Support. If you’re a NetNewsWire Lite user, you can skip to the section on NetNewsWire Lite.
NetNewsWire
Account information
Once a week, NetNewsWire makes a call to a NewsGator server with the following information:
- Your account username/password
- Your serial number
- Your location name
- “NetNewsWire 2.1”
(Your location name is made up by NetNewsWire, but you can change it. It’s something like “NetNewsWire-MyPowerBook.”)
In general, the system responds that all’s well, but it lets NetNewsWire know if, for instance, your account has expired. (NetNewsWire keeps working, in that case, but you’d need to renew your account to get newer versions.)
Note that you can use NetNewsWire on multiple Macs. In fact, we hope you do—that’s what syncing is for!
If the call doesn’t go through for some reason (if you’re on a train, for instance), NetNewsWire continues to work.
If you do not turn on syncing, then that’s it. No other data is sent to NewsGator: just the list above.
Syncing
If you turn on syncing, NetNewsWire will also send your subscriptions list and read/unread status to NewsGator. (Since that’s the whole point of syncing!)
Syncing is optional. While we think it’s a cool feature, and we hope you use it, nobody is required to use it.
NetNewsWire Lite
Without syncing
If you do not enable syncing, then no data is sent to NewsGator from NetNewsWire.
With syncing
If you do enable NewsGator syncing, you will need an account with NewsGator. When you sync, NetNewsWire will then send your NewsGator account username and password along with your subscriptions list and read/unread status to NewsGator.
Summing Up
The only way your subscriptions list and read/unread status is sent to NewsGator is if you turn on syncing, which is optional. And, again, NewsGator has a privacy policy. If you have any questions, please send email to NewsGator Support, support@newsgator.com.
