INF: How to add Publish Date and Feed Name fields to Outlook view

The information in this article applies to:

  • NewsGator 1.0, 1.1

SUMMARY

There are additional fields added to posts by NewsGator which are not shown by default. These fields include:

Publish Date - for feeds that include this information, this will be the date/time that the post was published.  If the feed did not include it, this field will be the date/time that the post was retrieved.

Feed Name - the name of the feed that the post came from. This field is especially useful when you want to store all of your news posts in a single folder, and sort or group them by the feed name.

These columns may be easily added to views.

MORE INFORMATION

To add one of these fields to the current view, do the following:

  1. Right-click on the column headers in the view, and select "Field Chooser".

  2. In the field chooser window, change the drop down to "User-defined fields".

  3. If there are existing posts in the folder, you should see the "Publish Date" and "Feed Name" fields.  If you do, simply drag these fields to the view in the position you want them in.

If you don't see the fields, it's because NewsGator has not yet stored a post in this folder. To add the fields, click "New" in the field chooser window, and type the exact name of the field; either "Publish Date" or "Feed Name".

  4. After adding the field(s), you may wish to change the format of the column (for example, specify the date format used for Publish Date). To do so, right-click on the column headers and select "Format columns", and make the appropriate changes.

Outlook 2002 only: If you want to change the default view used by NewsGator when it creates a new folder, you can edit the "NewsGatorView" view. To do this, do the following:

  1. Turn off the NewsPage (NewsGator menu, Options, NewsPage tab)

  2. Select the base news folder. If it was already selected, select another folder, then go back to the base news folder.

  3. Go to the View menu, Current View, Define Views, and edit the NewsGatorView.  You may need to add the field as a "New Field" - to do so, use the exact name "Publish Date" or "Feed Name", and set the field type to date/time or text, respectively.

  4. Apply the view.

  5. Turn the NewsPage back on, if desired.

This view is applied whenever NewsGator creates a new folder; however, it will not be automatically applied to existing folders.
